Dental insurance helps you pay for the cost of maintaining healthy teeth. Most policies are straightforward about the dental procedures that are covered and how much out-of-pocket you need to pay. You can buy dental insurance as a standalone policy or part of your medical insurance.
Overview Of Dental Insurance
Choose a dental policy plan according to the providers you want to select and how much you want to pay. If you have a specific dentist in mind and they belong in the network of an insurance company, you may choose an affordable plan.

If you have not chosen a dentist yet, you may select from the dentists on the in-network, which are typically belong to an affordable plan. On the other hand, if your dentist is not a member of the network, you may still obtain insurance, but you will pay more when going to an out-of-network dentist.

The premiums you pay for dental insurance every month depending on your plan, location, and insurer.

Dental Insurance Waiting Period
In general, dental insurance policies come with a waiting period from six to 12 months. This is before any work is done. For major work, the waiting period is usually longer, which can last up to two years. Insurance companies set these periods in place. This is to ensure they earn money from new accounts while preventing people from applying for another policy in order to cover upcoming procedures.

Categories Of Dental Insurance Policies
There are three categories under dental insurance coverage; basic, major, and preventive. The majority of dental plans cover all areas of preventive care, including sealants, X-rays, cleaning, semi-annual, or annual visits.

Basic procedures include root canals, fillings, extractions, and gum disease treatment. These procedures come with co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles that determine the out-of-pocket expenses of the patients. Dental insurance typically covers about 80% of these basic procedures, with you paying for the remaining amount.

When it comes to major procedures like dentures, inlays, bridges, and crowns, they are often done at a high co-payment. It means you will pay more out-of-pocket costs compared to other procedures.

Each policy is different in how it categorizes the dental procedures. Make sure to ask your insurance agent what is covered when comparing dental insurance policies.
